ABSTRACT

Self-medication is a widespread public health concern. University students are likely to be more prone to it since self-medication rates increase with educational level. Studies have shown that self-medication rates vary among academics belonging to different faculties, and medical students have the highest self-medication rates. However, it is unknown whether this holds in a vulnerable situation, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. It is also unknown whether differences in technical knowledge of drugs influence self-medication rates among students. Thus, this study analyzes and compares prophylactic self-medication among graduate students of different faculties in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. This cross-sectional observational study was conducted at a private university in southern Brazil. Students from the medicine, law, life sciences, and fine arts faculties were surveyed, and their responses were compared using a chi-square test. Among 396 respondents, 29.5% reported using preventive medication for COVID-19, and medical students were the least likely to do so. The self-medication rate was 13.6% among respondents, and self-medication did not differ significantly between students of different faculties. Of the students who self-medicated 63% reported having studied the medication before using them. Furthermore, the media did not induce drug use among 81.8% respondents. These results show that medical students used fewer preventive medications during the pandemic and refute the assertion that self-medication rates are higher among medical students. They also show that self-medication rates during the pandemic were significantly lower than those before the pandemic. ABSTRACT

Objective: To design an optimal formulation for quercetin and vitamin C nano-phytosome. Method(s): Nano-phytosomes are prepared by the thin layer hydration technique using a 2-level-5-factor design experimental. A total of 32 experimental formulas were used for data analysis. The ratio of quercetin: soy lecithin (X1), the ratio of quercetin: cholesterol (X2), stirring speed (X3), stirring temperature (X4), and stirring time (X5) were used as independent factors, while globule size as a dependent factor. Data analysis was carried out by Design Expert12 application. Characterization of the optimal formula included physicochemical evaluation, globule size analysis, zeta potential, polydispersity index, entrapment efficiency, Transition Electron Microscopy (TEM) analysis, and FTIR analysis. Result(s): The optimal formula consisted of quercetin: vitamin C: lecithin: cholesterol ratio of 1: 1: 1.046: 0.105 mol;stirring speed 763.986 rpm;stirring time of 59 min, at temperature 51.73 degreeC which produced 59.26 nm average globule size, PDI value 0.66;zeta potential value-35.93+/-0.95 mV and average SPAN value 0.61. This formulation showed entrapment efficiency of quercetin 91.69+/-0.18 % and vitamin C 90.82+/-0.13 %. The TEM and FITR analysis showed the morphological of the globules and interactions between the drugs, soy lecithin, and cholesterol to form nano-phytosomes. Conclusion(s): The conditions to obtain the optimal formula for quercetin vitamin C nano-phytosome consisted of quercetin: vitamin C: lecithin: cholesterol ratio of 1: 1: 1.046: 0.105 mol;stirring speed 763.986 rpm;stirring time of 59 min, and at temperature 51.73 degreeC.Copyright © 2023 The Authors.

ABSTRACT

COVID-19 pandemic has brought a significant change in the lives of all population segments. Irrespective of the country, religion, economic status, and position worldwide, a committed thought is developed on "IMMUNITY" and "IMMUNITY BOOSTERS."The nutrition and health portfolio of many populations worldwide reported severe impacts from changing trends in modern lifestyle, food habits, food consumption, and the environment. Defining health remains a crucial task over several decades. The present study is to understand and evaluate the knowledge and purchasing behaviour of the population during COVID-19 time. A survey is conducted through social media platforms with pre-designed and tested questionnaires. Data were collected from 200 respondents. A rapid assessment survey was conducted using Google Forms. Google Form was distributed through various social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, and LinkedIn in Indian communities residing across the globe. The above data shows that 64% have consumed Vitamin C supplements almost every day for 15 days, 13% for one month, 10% of the respondents more than one month, and 13% took supplements as supplements per the doctor's advice. The results indicate that nearly 73% of the respondents started consuming supplements, 15% sometimes, and 4% of the respondents expressed their consumption was on and off. When questioned in detail, it is mentioned that they have taken supplements. ABSTRACT

Background: Patients with cancer are at a higher risk of getting infected with the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 owing to their immunocompromised state. Providing care to these patients amidst the first wave of the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic was extremely challenging. Objective(s): This study was aimed at evaluating the clinical profile and disease-related outcomes of pediatric patients with hematological illnesses and cancer. Material(s) and Method(s): This retrospective study was conducted at a tertiary care center in North India during the first wave of the pandemic from March 2020 to December 2020. Children aged up to 18 years, who were treated for a hematological illness or malignancy or underwent hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and tested positive for COVID-19 regardless of symptoms were included in the study. Baseline demographic data related to the age, diagnosis, treatment status, and chemotherapy protocol used were collected. Outcomes including the cure rates, comorbidities, and sequelae were recorded. Result(s): A total of 650 tests for COVID-19 were performed for 181 children;22 patients were found to be COVID-19 positive. The most common diagnosis was acute leukemia (63.6%). None of the patients developed COVID-19 pneumonia. The majority of patients had asymptomatic infection and were managed at home. Among those with a symptomatic infection, the most common symptoms were fever and cough. A total of 3 (13.6%) patients needed oxygen therapy, one developed multisystem inflammatory syndrome of children leading to cardiogenic shock. Three patients required intensive care or respiratory support;all the patients had favorable clinical outcomes. The median time from the onset of COVID-19 to a negative result on the reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction test was 21.3 days. Cancer treatment was modified in 15 patients (68.2%). Conclusion(s): Our results suggest that children with hemato-oncological illnesses rarely experience severe COVID-19 disease. The impact of the first wave of COVID-19 primarily manifested as disruptions in the logistic planning and administration of essential treatment to these children rather than COVID-19 sequelae.Copyright © 2021 Cancer Research, Statistics, and Treatment Published by Wolters Kluwer - Medknow.

ABSTRACT

High dose ascorbic acid may increase risk of phenytoin toxicity. This case report demonstrates high phenytoin levels resulting in adverse drug reactions subsequent to dosing concomitantly with high dose vitamin C, or ascorbic acid (AA), as a precaution against acquiring corona virus (COVID) infection. This patient suffered from a major seizure when he ran out of his phenytoin prescription. Subsequent initiation of phenytoin and later addition of high dose AA resulted in truncal ataxia and falls with bilateral wrist and finger extension weakness. Phenytoin and AA were discontinued, and the patient returned to baseline on a new medication regimen of lacosamide and gabapentin without any other major seizures one year later.

ABSTRACT

Background: Total parenteral nutrition (TPN) is a life-saving therapy for patients with chronic intestinal failure. TPN typically consists of macronutrients (amino acids, dextrose, and lipids) as well as micronutrients (multi-vitamins [MVI] and trace elements) to meet fluid, calorie, and micronutrient needs. With the early years of PN administration, multiple deficiencies were noted leading to guidelines regarding need for daily use of essential trace element and MVI preparation for parenteral use. Unfortunately, during the last few years we have seen multiple shortages of PN related supplies including the most recent shortage of parenteral MVI preparation. Major organizations such as ASPEN have developed recommendations regarding management of shortages, however their clinical impact has not been fully evaluated. The current study evaluated the impact of MVI shortage on change in clinical practice and the prevalence of deficiency. Method(s): A retrospective review of electronic medical records for patients who received TPN during time of shortage in IV multivitamins supply due to COVID-19 crisis between January 2021 and June 2021. In our program, the shortage affected one TPN supplier. We included patients who received their TPN from affected supplier and who were tested for micronutrients including Vitamins A, B12, C, and D in the 6 months preceding the shortage in supply (period 1) as well as during the shortage period (period 2). Period 1 was defined as from July 1, 2020, to December 31, 2020, and period 2 was defined as from January 1, 2021, to June 30, 2021. In addition to baseline clinical characteristics, we captured changes in studied micronutrients. Result(s): Current retrospective analysis of a prospectively maintained database noted 21 patients (mean age of 63.3 +/- 13.8, 62% female) were impacted by MVI shortage during study period (Table 1). Most common primary diagnosis was Crohn's disease (33.3%) followed by enterocutaneous fistula (19%), and gastrointestinal dysmotility (14.3%). In 19/21 (90%) patients, MVI was administered 3 days per week in PN. In the remaining two patients who had short bowel,MVI was continued 7 days per week. Additionally, 19/21 (90%) patients also were supplemented orally with Vitamin D (17/21), Vitamin B12 (5/21), MVI (3/21), Vitamin C (1/21). There was a decline in average Vitamin C levels between the two study periods (Table 2) with a trend towards a decline in average 25-hydroxy vitamin D levels, while mean vitamin A and B12 levels did not change significantly. There was a significant increase in Vitamin D and C deficiencies, while no increase in deficiencies in Vitamin E, A, and B12 levels was noted (Figure 1). Conclusion(s): Unfortunately, shortages of key PN related supplies have become commonplace in the last few years. The most recent shortage affected MVI supplies. Our group managed the shortage through a combination of reduction of parenteral MVI administration to 3 days per week along with additional supplementation of specific micronutrients orally. Although with this strategy, there was an increase in Vitamin D and C levels falling below reference range, no significant deficiencies were noted. (Table Presented).

ABSTRACT

Introduction There is currently a lack of evidence on clinical nutrition in Covid-19. Aim of the work: Systematic overview of clinical nutrition in Covid-19. Material and methods A systematic literature search: 2 meta-analyses, 12 systematic reviews and meta-analyses, 9 prospective randomized controlled trials, 3 prospective observational studies, 7 retrospective studies, 25 narrative reviews. Results a) Obese patients have an increased risk of a severe course of the disease, b) there is a connection between obesity and an increased risk of death, c) Covid-19 mortality increases from a BMI>27 kg/m2, in all BMI classes 1,6% per 1 kg/m2 in the event of weight gain, in the case of severe obesity (> 40-45 BMI) by a factor of 1,5 to 2 and per 5 kg/m2, d) the risk of a severe course of Covid-19 increases also with increased visceral fat tissue percentage, total body fat mass and upper abdominal circumference, e) the mortality rate can be 10 times higher in malnourished Covid-19 patients, f) serum albumin provides evidence of a poor course of the disease, g) enteral omega-3 fatty acid intake could stabilize kidney function and improve the outcome, h) foods with a low glycemic index should be preferred, i) vitamin D deficiency should be avoided, daily vitamin D and zinc supplementation can be beneficial, j) one-time high dose vitamin D and enteral vitamin C provide no benefit, but the risk of thrombosis could be reduced and the antibody response enhanced with zinc, k) nutritional intervention reduces mortality. Conclusion Screening and assessment of nutritional status are important in Covid-19 patients. ABSTRACT

Introduction: COVID-19 is now deemed as the global health burden. As of 24 july 2022, over 567million confirmed cases and over 6.3 million deaths have been reported. Symptoms include fever, cough, fatigue, body ache and shortness of breath, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is a water-soluble vitamin that plays a major role as antioxidant and as co-factor of various biosynthetic pathways in the immune system. Objective(s): In this study we aimed to summarize the current evidence regarding the use of vitamin C in the prevention or treatment of patients with SARS-CoV2 infection, based on available publications between January 2020 and July 2022. Material(s) and Method(s): In this comprehensive literature review two electronic databases (PubMed and EMBASE) were searched from 1 January 2020 to 1 July 2022. Result(s): Numerous researchers and clinicians hypothesised that ascorbic acid could help prevent SARS-CoV-2 infection by boosting immune response and reducing the severity of the viral-mediated inflammatory response. Preliminary observational studies indicate low vitamin C status in critically ill patients with COVID-19. Conclusion(s): While some studies have found no correlation between vitamin intake and mortality, others have discovered that this vitamin c is beneficial in lowering the death rate. In summary, vitamin C possesses positive impacts on curing of infection and this may play a protective role in the current COVID-19 pandemic through boosting the immune system.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Corona virus disease (COVID-19) was declared as a Pandemic by WHO on March 11, 2020. Since health care workers play an important role in providing care to infected patients, they are exposed to unprecedented levels of risk. At the initial phase of this pandemic, no definitive treatment was available, the only way to combat this disease was prevention. A number of prophylactic drugs were being studied during that time for use by health care workers. On 23rd March 2020, Government of India issued recommendation through National Task Force for Covid-19, for using Hydroxychloroquine as prophylaxis for SARS COV-2. Preclinical studies of Azithromycin have shown immunomodulation and in vitro activity against SARS-COV-2, that has led to its widespread usage during COVID-19. Ivermectin, an antiparasitic drug was reported to have an in vitro activity against SARS-COV-2. This orally administered drug was included in India's revised National COVID-19 treatment protocol for people with mild infection. Vitamin C, a water soluble vitamin has been considered for potential beneficial effects in COVID-19 disease. Many animal studies have indicated that a daily intake of vitamin C may prevent infections. Aim(s): To evaluate the pattern of drugs (HCQ, AZITHROMYCIN, IVERMECTIN,and VITAMIN C) used for COVID-19 prophylaxis among health care workers at GMC, Srinagar. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study is being conducted by using a survey questionnaire. A survey questionnaire in English has been developed after literature review. The responses will be analyzed using descriptive statistics of frequency and percentage.

ABSTRACT

Background: It is well knowledge that various viral illnesses may interfere with a man's ability to father children. Through the angiotensin-converting enzyme-2 receptor, which is highly concentrated in testicular tissue, the corona virus illness known as COVID-19 may cause harm to several organs. On the other hand, there is a paucity of data about the transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome corona virus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) in sperm, as well as the virus's influence on spermatogenesis and the capacity for fertility. We intended to look into whether or not COVID-19 guys' sperm contained SARS-CoV-2 as well as examine how COVID-19 affected the overall quality of the sperm and the degree to which it's DNA was fragmented. Material(s) and Method(s): The survey was conducted between May 2022 to October 2022, with the participation of 40 male COVID-19 patients who were between the ages of 19 and 45 and enrolled at the RSDKS, Government Medical College, Ambikapur, Chhattisgarh. We tested each sample of sperm with a real-time reverse transcriptase and found no abnormalities. At the time of the initial sample, which took place during COVID-19, a comprehensive examination of the sperm was carried out. This analysis included the calculation of the sperm DNA Fragmentation Index. After 74 days had passed since the first sample, we were able to get the second specimen and carried out the aforementioned tests once again. Result(s): All of the sperm samples that were examined using real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) came back negative for SARS-CoV-2. These samples were taken during the first and second sampling. The initial sample had considerably lower levels of fructose, semen volume, vitality, total motility, sperm concentration, total sperm count, percentage of normal morphology, and cytoplasmic droplet percentage than the subsequent samples. On the other hand, the agglutination of the semen, the percentage of head defects, the DNA Fragmentation Index, the liquefaction time, the viscosity of the semen, and the number of leukocytes all rose. At the second sample, these results were inverted, but not to the level that would be considered optimal. These results all had a p-value less than 0.05, meaning they were statistically significant. As a result, COVID-19 has a detrimental impact on the characteristics of the sperm, including the sperm DNA fragmentation index. Conclusion(s): The quality of the semen remained low up until the second time it was sampled, despite the fact that we were unable to discover SARS-CoV-2 in the sample. It is recommended that assisted reproductive technology (ART) clinics and sperm banking facilities evaluate the quality of the sperm produced by males infected with COVID-19 and exclude men who have a history of being infected with SARS-CoV-2 until the men's sperm quality recovers to normal.Copyright © 2023 Ubiquity Press. ABSTRACT

Introduction: The evidence-based use of the oral form of Vitamin C as adjuvant treatment for critically ill COVID-19 patients is lacking worldwide despite its intravenous preparation form being demonstrated to be potentially beneficial in some studies. The present study objective was to evaluate the effects of oral Vitamin C in the treatment of severe COVID-19. Method(s): This was an open-label observational study with propensity score matching on unvaccinated, similar medication history, hospitalized stage-5 severe COVID-19 patients, who were treated with daily 2g, 4g, or 6g of oral Vitamin C respectively from November 2020 to December 2021. The clinical data were collected retrospectively for analysis. The study outcomes were 28-day in-hospital mortality, the proportion of mechanical ventilation-free days (MVFD), the Day 1, Day 3, and Day 7 of both the inflammation progression (c-reactive protein) and the Sequential Organ Failure Assessment score (SOFA). Result(s): A total of 147 patients were recruited. The number of subjects in the 2g, 4g, and 6g Vitamin C groups was 43, 44, and 60 respectively. There was no significant difference in the 28-day mortality (p=0.336), the MVFD (p=0.486), the c-reactive protein level on Day 1 (p=0.856), Day 3 (p=0.977), Day 7 (p=0.462), and the SOFA score on Day 1(p=0.540), Day 3 (p=0.149) and Day 7 (p=0.754) between the three Vitamin C dosing groups. Conclusion(s): The present study showed that the oral form of Vitamin C provided no benefit in reducing stage-5 COVID-19 patients' hospital mortality, the mechanical ventilation requirement, or the overall inflammation progression.

The World Health Organization shows high morbidity and mortality figures and it is essential to delve into the epidemiological and clinical aspects of diagnosis and treatment to face and defeat this disease. Some researchers have shown that the use of vitamin C, both from food as well as oral or intravenous vitamin supplements, has a positive effect on the body. The potential effect of vitamin C is the reduction of lung inflammation that could play a key role in lung injury caused by coronavirus infection.

The outbreak of COVID-19 occurred in January 2020, the epidemic is still rampant around the world. The Shanghai Expert Consensus on Comprehensive Treatment and Management of Corona Virus Disease 2019 was issued in early March 2020, which provided the guidance of the standardized treatment and rational medication for COVID-19. Background and Aim: The new type of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (Coronavirus 2019-COVID-19) infection is the largest pandemic in the last decade. Acute respiratory distress syndrome is the complication with the highest mortality rate of this infection and there is no adequate treatment with proven efficacy to reduce mortality. This multi-center, retrospective study aimed to determine the effect of high-dose vitamin C on survival and other endpoints in invasively ventilated ARDS patients. Method(s): This multi-center, observational retrospective cohort study was performed at five ICU centers between March 2020 and July 2020. Patients with ARDS due to COVID-19 who required IMV were included. High-dose vitamin C group was defined as patients who were treated with vitamin C over 200 mg/kg for four days. Patients who were not given vitamin C treatment were defined as the control group by using propensity score match analysis, as well. The groups were compared about the effects of high-dose vitamin C treatment on ICU mortality. Result(s): A total of 86 patients with a mean age of 67.85 +/- 10.38 were included in the study. 72.1% of the patients were male. Forty-two (49%) patients were in the high dose vitamin C group, and 44 (51%) were in the control group. The mean PaO2/FiO2 at the time of admission to the ICU was 128.27+/-58.69 mmHg (133.63+/-56.51 mmHg in the control group, 122.36+/-61.18 mmHg in the study group, p=0.389). The mortality rate of high dose vitamin C group was lower than the control group (73.8% vs. 90.9%, p = 0.037,respectively). Conclusion(s): As an adjunctive therapy in invasively ventilated patients with COVID-19-associated ARDS, high doses of vitamin C may reduce mortality and development of organ damage. Prospective, randomized controlled studies with larger numbers of patients are needed to confirm these findings.Copyright © 2023, Society of Turkish Intensivists. All rights reserved.

ABSTRACT

A 50-year-old male patient with agitated depression and hyperlipemia received oral amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium 0.5 g once daily and 2 lopinavir and ritonavir tablets twice daily for novel coronavirus infection, based on previous drugs including quetiapine, clonazepam, and atorvastatin calcium. After 3 days, lopinavir and ritonavir was changed to oral arbidol 200 mg, thrice daily due to suspicious drug interaction. After taking arbidol for 3 days, the patient developed red papules on the whole body. Considering that it might be related to amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium, the drug was stopped and loratadine was given. But the rashes were aggravated. Considering that the drug eruption was caused by arbidol, arbidol was discontinued and the rashes subsided in a large area the next day. Then vitamin C injection, calcium gluconate injection, and ribavirin were added. After 5 days, the rashes subsided completely. Herbal plant extracts or purified phytocomponents have been extensively used to treat several diseases since ancient times. The Indian Ayurvedic system and Chinese traditional medicines have documented the medicinal properties of important herbs. In Ayurveda, the polyherbal formulation is known to exhibit better therapeutic efficacy compared to a single herb. This review focuses on six key ayurvedic herbal plants namely, Tinospora cordifolia, Withania somnifera, Glycyrrhiza glabra/Licorice, Zingiber officinale, Emblica officinalis and Ocimum sanctum. These plants possess specific phytocomponents that aid them in fighting infections and keeping body healthy and stress-free. Plants were selected due to their reported antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects in several diseases and effectiveness in controlling viral pathogenesis. An ad-vanced literature search was carried out using Pubmed and google scholar. Result(s): These medicinal plants are known to exhibit several protective features against various diseases or infections. Here we have particularly emphasized on antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial and immunomodulatory properties which are common in these six plants. Recent literature analysis has revealed Ashwagandha to be protective for Covid-19 too. The formulation from such herbs can exhibit synergism and hence better effectiveness against infection and related dis-eases. The importance of these medicinal herbs becomes highly prominent as it maintains the har-monious balance by way of boosting the immunity in a human body. Further, greater mechanistic analyses are required to prove their efficacy in fighting infectious diseases like Covid-19. It opens the arena for in-depth research of identifying and isolating the active components from these herbs and evaluating their potency to inhibit viral infections as polyherbal formulations.Copyright © 2023 Bentham Science Publishers.

ABSTRACT

The corona virus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has increased the interest in self-care strategies, including self-medication. Medical students, as future health practitioners, learn more about medications than other students. This study aimed to describe self-medication practices for preventing COVID-19 among medical students at Universitas Islam Indonesia. This observational study used a cross-sectional design and was undertaken in November- December 2020. The study sample included 336 undergraduate medical students determined using a consecutive sampling technique based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were collected using an online questionnaire about self-medication practices in the preceding 3 months. Among a total of 336 students, 137 (41%) reported using self-medication intending to prevent COVID-19, and 126 (92%) of these 137 took preventive supplements, mainly vitamins C, D, and E, and omega-3. Seven students reported the use of zinc, mainly in combination with other vitamins. Students who practiced self-medication lived closer to people confirmed with COVID-19, washed their hands more often, and desinfected their belongings more frequently than their counterparts (p<0.05). The mean duration for consuming vitamins was 11-16 days. Forty students (29%) used herbal medicine to prevent COVID-19;ginger, turmeric, honey, black seed, cutcherry, and Curcuma were the most often consumed herbal remedies. Fourteen students (10%) reported taking over-the-counter medications to relieve symptoms related to COVID-19, including antipyretic, analgesic, antiseptic, antihistamine, decongestant, antitussive, and expectorant medications. Most respondents (82%) purchased their medications at pharmacies, and 11 (9%) obtained them from online shops. These findings show the high rate of self-medication using vitamins and herbal remedies for COVID-19 prevention among university medical students. Further studies are needed to explore students' knowledge about the risks of self-medication including the use of herbal medicines.Copyright © 2022 Marmara University Press.

ABSTRACT

Background: Older adults are vulnerable to disease exposure because of the agerelated decrease in immune capacity. Older adults with macronutrient and micronutrient deficiencies may have poor nutritional status and low immune responses, making them prone to COVID-19 infection.Objective: This study aimed to assess the effect of orange almond potato cookie supplementation on weight, hemoglobin, and albumin levels in undernourished older adults during the COVID-19 pandemic.Methods: A quasi-experimental study design was utilized in a cohort of 31 older adults. The subjects consumed 50 grams of cookies per day for 4 weeks. The examination was performed to assess the hemoglobin and albumin levels at pre- and post-study timepoints. Education about balanced nutrition and anemia was provided throughout the study using leaflets, flipcharts, and videos. The subjects were weighed weekly to assess compliance;cookies were distributed, and a daily food consumption record was collected three times a week during home visits.Results: Weight, hemoglobin, and albumin levels increased by 0.4 kg, 0.1 points, and 1 point, respectively. The difference was significant for weight, albeit nonsignificant for hemoglobin and albumin levels. At the end of the study, participants' knowledge regarding balanced nutrition and anemia was statistically significantly different, as well as that of energy, carbohydrate, protein, fat, vitamin C, and iron intake. Weight gain was found to be influenced by the total cookie consumption (p < 0.035).Conclusion: Orange almond potato cookies increased the undernourished older adults' weight when consumed for 4 weeks.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Vitamin C appears to be a viable treatment option for patients with COVID-19. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of vitamin C versus comparative interventions in patients with COVID-19. The outcome of interest was all-cause mortality. RESULTS: The meta-analysis of eleven trials using a random-effects model revealed significant reduction in the risk of all-cause mortality with the administration of vitamin C among patients with COVID-19 relative to no vitamin C (pooled odds ratio = 0.53; 95% confidence interval 0.30-0.92). Subgroup analysis of studies that included patients with severe COVID-19 also produced findings of significant mortality reduction with the administration of vitamin C relative to no vitamin C (pooled odds ratio = 0.47; 95% confidence interval 0.26-0.84). CONCLUSION: Overall, evidence from RCTs suggests a survival benefit for vitamin C in patients with severe COVID-19. However, we should await data from large-scale randomized trials to affirm its mortality benefits.
